Experience Nature

Birds of Prey Photography Workshop

Type: Photographic Workshop

Dates: 12 August 2017

photograph

Overview: Join me and the birds in the rural location of Hatton Country World near Warwick.
A variety of birds of prey will be available to photograph, including majestic Barn Owls, Tawny Owl, Little Owl, Merlin and the beautifully marked Kestrel.

The site has some lovely natural settings and old farm buildings, so we'll get some genuinely wild looking images.

You'll also have the opportunity to try your hand at some flight shots.
I will be available to offer guidance and tips where needed and you'll be sure to come away with some superb shots.

We limit the workshops to 10 people so as not to get in each others way and ultimately to keep disturbance to the birds to a minimum.

The day will start at 10 am and finishing at 4pm, with a break for lunch between. Lunch is not included within the price, so bring along a packed lunch.

Equipment required - Ideally a digital SLR camera, although it will be possible to get good images using a bridge or compact camera of the perched birds. Lens choice for those using an SLR would be a short zoom, ideally between 24 and 200mm and between 200mm and 600mm for flight shots.

If you need any more information about the day, do get in touch.

Spaces Available. More dates coming soon

Cost: £90

Deposit: £90

Birdwatching for Beginners - Upton Warren, Worcestershire

Type: Wildlife Watching Tour

Dates: 06 September to 06 September 2017

photograph

Overview: If you are new to birdwatching, or a total novice who wants to learn more, this day might be just the thing to get you started on your journey into a fascinating and rewarding hobby.

For a land locked reserve, Upton Warren offers a huge diversity of bird species, with it's varied habitat of lakes, salt marsh, woodland and reed bed.

Ashley will help you tell the difference between the different species on site by both sight and call and we may see around 60 species at this time of year.

Highlights should include majestic Avocets which have bred here for some years now, along with the very vocal Cettis Warbler and quite possibly the odd locally rarity that may be just passing through to 'refuel' on migration.

The reserve is very easy to find, located between Bromsgrove and Droitwich, a couple of minutes from junction 5 of the M5 motorway.

A full day is broken up with a pub lunch which is included in the price of just 65, which will be a good opportunity to see where we are all at with our identification skills thus far.

Contact me through the website, or give me a call on 07704 189835 for more details.

Birdwatch The Gambia

Type: Wildlife Watching Tour

Dates: 24 November to 5 December 2017

photograph

Overview: Having visited The Gambia a more than a dozen times now, leading two tours a year here since 2011, Ashley is offering his experience, local knowledge and contacts, to lead this Birdwatching tour to one of the most celebrated birdwatching destinations in the world.
With close on 600 species recorded in a country half the size of Wales, we are guaranteed a wide and diverse range of surprisingly approachable, colourful and interesting birds to suit everyone.
If youve never been to Africa birdwatching, this is a great place to start, pick up a fresh new field guide and relive the days when you started birding in the UK, almost every bird will be new. Nine Kingfisher species, five Rollers, eight Bee-eaters, even three species of Hoopoe and thats just the start of it.
On this tour we cover all the best coastal sites, moving inland (up river) in two stages to increase the range of species we see. We visit forests, savanna, bee-eater colonies, tidal mangrove creeks, huge rivers, rice fields, fresh water wetlands and sandy beaches.
So while winter starts to take hold in the UK , why not spend some time in the sunshine, in temperatures likely to be in the 70s, its just what the doctor ordered.
Check out the Gambia gallery for images of some of the birds we are likely to encounter.

Gems of The Gambia

Type: Wildlife Photography Tour

Dates: 23 January to 6 February 2018

photograph

Overview: Gambia has long been known as a great place to go and see a wide variety of colourful and interesting bird species with the added bonus of great weather just when we need to get away from our harsh winter back home.
I'm offering a slightly different approach to the usual Gambia experience; my tour is designed for wildlife photographers, who want to spend time close to their subject.
The main focus for our two weeks in Gambia will be the Kingfishers, Bee-eaters and Rollers, some of the most spectacular birds in the world. Some will be more challenging than others, but with such a variety of other species in abundance, there will never be a dull moment.
We will visit two Bee-eater colonies, giving fantastic close views of these colourful birds, and opportunities of some great shots. The itinerary also includes four long boat trips, which give us great chances to catch up with a number of Kingfisher species, not to mention the abundance of other water birds we get close too. Rollers are around every corner, perching prominently, so prospects of more wonderful photos.
We start and finish the tour on the coast, where we can find Little, White-throated and Swallow-tailed Bee-eaters, but we need to go inland to catch up with Red-throated, Little Green and Northern Carmine Bee-eaters.
Likewise different areas will be better for the different Rollers and Kingfishers, but we have an excellent local guide to help us throughout the trip.
I've been to The Gambia many times and have been leading tours here since 2011, so you are in good hands, both for photographic tips and for local knowledge.
Check out the Gambia gallery for images of some of the birds we are likely to encounter.

This tour is limited to just 8 places to maximise the experience.

Spanish Pyrenees Photography and Birdwatching

Type: Wildlife Photography Tour

Dates: 20 June to 25 June 2018

photograph

Overview: The Lammergeier is one of those must see birds and this tour gives you unrivalled opportunity to get up close to these amazing creatures.

We will use purpose built photography hides, overlooking where these birds feed throughout the year, high in the Spanish Pyrenees. Three hides offer different views of the birds, plus a forth hide close by overlooking a deep valley, offers the opportunity to photograph these birds against a spectacular mountain backdrop.

Other regular raptors include, Griffon Vulture (up to 400 birds during a feed) , Monk (Black) and Egyptian Vultures, plus good chances of Golden Eagle, Peregrine and Red & Black Kites. In fact this is one of the only sites where you'll find all 4 of Europe's Vultures in one location.

A fifth hide is set up for passerine photography, overlooking a natural pool, where regular Dartford & Subalpine Warblers, Rock & Cirl Bunting, Hoopoe, Crested Tit and plenty more besides come in to drink and bathe.

We will rotate use of each of the hides to give everyone ample opportunity of photographing each key species on the tour.

In addition to the birds, butterflies and alpine flowers are numerous and we can incorporate an additional guide to help find and identify these for you on request.

Sunsets are amazing up here at nearly 4000ft and to photograph these with a cold beer at the end of the day, while Nightjars, Nightingales and Scops Owl call around you is truly magical.

Tour cost includes return flights & transfer from Barcelona Airport, accommodation and meals throughout your stay, plus use of the hides. Ashley will be on hand to offer advise to photographers where required.

For those wishing to make this more of a birding trip, guiding will be provided to find an even more extensive selection of birds and wildlife in the surrounding area.

The tour is limited to 6 clients only, so early booking is advised.

Ecuador - Andean Highlights

Type: Wildlife Watching Tour

Overview: The lofty Andes have a range of habitats which vary with the altitude, so Ecuador has the worlds fourth longest bird list, despite its small size!
To minimise travelling time, with just two lodges this tour concentrates on the area around Quito, which has more than 10% of the worlds second largest bird family, the dazzling Hummingbirds, and so we may see up to thirty different species of these stunning little birds, including the amazing Sword-billed and Giant Hummingbirds.

Sri Lanka - Birds, Leopards & Blue Whales

Type: Wildlife Watching Tour

Dates: 24 November to 8 December 2018

photograph

Overview: Sri Lanka is only the size of Ireland, and yet it is one of the most biodiverse areas in southern Asia with, for example, 244 species of Butterflies alone! The list of bird species tops 430, including 33 endemics, and with the help of a highly experienced English-speaking guide, who will be with us throughout the tour, we should see all of them, including the rare Serendib Scops Owl, which was only discovered in 2001!

Our visit coincides with the presence of winter visitors, including waders from Siberia and songbirds from the Himalayas. In addition to all the birds, Sri Lanka has a wealth of other wildlife and we can therefore expect to see Marsh Mugger Crocodile and various land mammals such as Grey Langur and Purple-faced Leaf Monkeys, Water Buffalo, Sambar and Spotted Deer, Wild Boar, Indian Fruit Bat, Sloth Bear, Leopard and Asian Elephant.

On top of all this, our visit to the south coast is timed to coincide with a calm sea and the presence of Blue Whales, as well as several other whales and dolphins, which can often be seen from a boat at close range. We shall have two bites at this cherry and with so much to see this tropical island really is a paradise for all nature lovers.

This tour is being run in association with New Horizons Wildlife tours and will be covered by their ATOL licence, no. 6266

The price includes return flights direct from Heathrow to Colombo with SriLankan Airlines, thirteen nights full board en-suite accommodation, all transport in Sri Lanka, by air-conditioned vehicle, all excursions and reserve entry fees, including three jeep safaris in national parks, and two whale watching excursions, plus bird checklist and the services of your guides.

Jewels of The Gambia

Type: Wildlife Watching Tour

Dates: 22 January to 05 February 2019

photograph

Overview: The Gambia has been a popular Birdwatching destination since the 1970's and is still probably the safest African Country to visit. No wonder our tour leader Ashley has visited close to 20 times, leading two trips a year here since 2011.

As with all our trips, this is run at a relaxed pace, giving ample opportunity to enjoy the wildlife and in particular the many colourful bird species that can be found here. With 9 Kingfishers and 8 Bee-eater species for example, this guarantees to be a real feast for the eyes.

With little effort we can hope to see up to 300 bird species, with the photographers among us expecting to get quality images of a large percentage of these.

Throughout the trip we will have 3 guides and our own driver, making sure individual group members needs are catered for, so photographers for example can spend longer with a single species if they wish.

We spend time near the coast, but also travel inland to experience the real Gambia and it's various habitats and associated wildlife, including Hippo's, Bee-eater colonies, bird rich rice paddies and ancient forests.

The tour dates coincide with return flights from Birmingham and Gatwick, with just 30 minutes between the two departures, so Midlanders and those from the South East have equal opportunity to join this trip.

Please contact Ashley for a full itinerary and do check out the Gambia gallery through the link below for further temptation.

The price below does not include flights.
